Position Overview:

The Department of Justice (DOJ), Bureau of Prisons (BOP), is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior Network Administrator to support enterprise network operations in a fast-paced, highly regulated federal environment. This hybrid position based in Washington, DC provides hands-on support for network infrastructure and connectivity across DOJ/BOP systems and facilities.

The Junior Network Administrator will assist in maintaining network availability, monitoring network performance, troubleshooting connectivity issues, and ensuring network devices operate efficiently under the guidance of senior network engineering staff and the Lead Network Administrator.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support daily network operations and administration activities for DOJ/BOP enterprise environments.
  • Monitor and maintain network infrastructure components including routers, switches, hubs, and related network devices.
  • Ensure network equipment is functioning properly and operating within established performance thresholds.
  • Respond to network anomalies, alerts, outages, and connectivity issues under the direction of the Lead Network Administrator.
  • Perform initial troubleshooting and diagnosis of network incidents and escalate complex issues as necessary.
  • Assist with configuration, deployment, replacement, and maintenance of network hardware and infrastructure components.
  • Support network monitoring activities and review logs, alerts, and system performance metrics.
  • Assist with documenting network changes, configurations, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Support implementation of network security policies and compliance requirements.
  • Coordinate with systems administrators, service desk personnel, and cybersecurity teams to resolve infrastructure issues.
  • Participate in scheduled maintenance activities, upgrades, patching efforts, and equipment refresh initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records for network devices and related assets.
  • Provide support for hybrid workforce connectivity including VPN and remote access troubleshooting.
  • Follow established change management and incident management procedures.
  • Support continuity of operations and disaster recovery initiatives as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 4 years of professional networking experience supporting enterprise environments.
  • Experience supporting:
    • Network operations and administration
    • Routers, switches, hubs, and network infrastructure devices
    • Network troubleshooting and issue resolution
    • LAN/WAN environments
    • TCP/IP networking concepts and protocols
  • Experience responding to network incidents, outages, and anomalies.
  • Familiarity with network monitoring and diagnostic tools.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with technical teams and non-technical users.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with senior engineering staff.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting federal government environments, preferably DOJ or law enforcement agencies.
  • Experience with Cisco networking technologies.
  • Familiarity with:
    • VLANs
    • DNS
    • DHCP
    • VPN technologies
    • Wireless networking
    • Network security principles
  • Experience supporting hybrid and remote workforce connectivity solutions.
  • Knowledge of ITIL service management processes and ticketing systems such as ServiceNow.
  • Exposure to network documentation and diagramming tools.

Education and Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Network Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • CompTIA Network+ certification may substitute for one (1) year of required networking experience.
  • Additional networking certifications are desirable:
    • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
    • Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)
